Archaeology since the French visits: Whales, coal, and timber
Mr Parry Kostoglou

Parry Kostoglou Parry Kostoglou is a consultant archaeologist. He has 15 years experience and has worked at sites relating to historic themes including whaling, sealing, mining, logging, fishing, trapping, convict settlement, agriculture and wartime POW internment. He worked as a project and management archaeologist for several government departments before establishing own business. He completed a PhD on the mid 19th century American sealers on Heard Island.

Since initial European arrival at Recherche Bay in 1792, this location has served as the venue for numerous commercial and private ventures which have so far failed to enter the greater public record. Such diverse activities as whaling, coal mining, ship building, farming and sawmilling have all left their own indelible mark on the landscape. In this paper, the author will briefly elaborate on the historical development of the bay between 1792 and 1950 before describing the results of archaeological field work which included the assessment of sites from all the above themes.
